Ok, to start this off, i cannot remember the name of this man to save my life..But i remember his story. maybe i should carry a note pad or something... but i digress.
this was a normal summer day, walking around down town. It was overcast, and a very contrasty day, so of course i was excited to bring out my camera!! after about 20 minuets of walking around it started to rain a little. i took shelter under the Zambro's awning with this gentleman.
the first this that stood out, was his chair! this was a giant expression of this man's character. almost instantly he said hi, and introduced himself. we got to talking about his chair and everything on it. the tail happens to be my favorite.
after about 20 mins of being stuck, i asked him if he would mind me taking some pictures of his chair, he obliged, and then noticed my scar on the back of my neck. he then started to tell me his story.
this man was a avid motorcycle rider, one day while riding he was hit by a large pick up truck. he was slowing down to make a turn on Cliff and Benson avenue. he was struck from behind, and drug, under the truck, to where Marlins Grill is now located. he suffered a broken neck, back, hip, and multiple other bones. he was in a coma for close to 6 months after the accident. according to him he was still able to hear the things around him and knew of his situation, but he could do nothing to wake up. he told me " i broke almost everything i could, and lost so much blood, but i did not lose a drop of shit, im still full of it". the best sense of humor ever.
he has been confined to this chair for over ten years. after about a year he decided to make it his own, just like he would with his motorcycle. he gave it the same personality he has, and possibly a little more attitude. you cant even see most of the little details in these photos but, he told me "if they are going to stare, i'm going to give them something entertaining to look at". again with the sense of humor...
i guess this would go under the category of "Don't judge a book by it's cover" this was possibly one of the most approachable, and nicest person i have ever had the pleasure of photographing. and i cant wait to run into more people in the future.
