My random life, infront of the lens.

Icepocalypse 2013. Day 3...

So after 2 days of crazy ice and rain, we were awarded 6 inches of snow... Again this is the craziest Spring in a long time.

Beyond the haze.

This shot was due to our weather in South Dakota being, well, less than normal. Almost the middle of January, and we have rain, and fog. I drive by this location a lot, and have always wanted to try to shoot something here. The problem is behind the tree is not the best back drop for a photo. This time I was on my way to pick up my son for his first wrestling tournament. As I turned the corner I knew I couldn't pass this shot up again. I parked the car and jogged down to the corner in the rain and mud. The fog, and mist totally wiped out the background and the road next to it.  3 shots later and it was done. Simple shot with the set up I have been waiting for. Black and white is not my normal "style" per se, but this image would not be the same in color. Lets just hope I did it justice.

Let me know what you think.

ice drop

there are very few things that i enjoy about winter. one of them is the beauty and randomness that it produces. no matter how many times you see ice, snow, or frost it is never the same. constant change and transition is something that makes for beauty in the smallest things.

in this shot i used my 50mm f1.8 to shoot a very large icicle coming off our roof. i had the aperture maxed out to get the fastest shutter i could to freeze the drop as it fell. i took plenty of shots of this and loved the macro style of this shot.

scarred land....

burnt tree

this was shot on a short vacation to the Black Hills of South Dakota. i took a trip out there with my girlfriend for the 4th of July in 2012. this was out by Jewel Cave.

i shot SO MANY photos out there and i am just now finally getting around to taking a peek at some. pretty sure i over shot. this was back when i was on my HDR kick and everything was bracketed. this is not and HDR shot, just a single exposure.

shot at F22 1/8th of a second ISO 250 using my Sigma 17-35mm lens.

first snowfall... part 4

falls pano

now for my final post on the first snowfall at Falls Park in Sioux Falls, SD.

the whole shebang.... this is a panorama of the whole park, with our city's skyline in the background.

single file please...

here is a shot i did on the same day as 40/52...

literally a short walk on my local bike path, led to many beautiful photos. this one is not HDR, the wind was too high for me to get a decent bracketed exposure. so i shot to the left and really underexposed the sky. the sun was shining directly on the trees so that helped a ton. all post was done with lightroom. i added a graduated filter to the bottom to lighten it up a bit, and boosted the vibrancy and saturation a little. probably one of the most simple photos i have taken in a while, but it turned out amazing.

thanks again for reading.

oh man, how i love HDR. i am still very addicted to HDR, and my fisheye lens. for some reason i just love the perspective that it is capable of delivering.

this week i did a sunset silhouette. i went east of Sioux Falls to Arrowhead Park and shot towards Sioux Falls. nothing too special about the shot technical wise. i just waded for the sun to set below the horizon and snapped away.

i chose a tight/narrow crop on this, because i am debating on getting it printed on either Fuji high gloss, or a metallic paper, and encapsulated in plexiglass. this is very similar, ok its actually the same thing Peter Lik does for his prints. over the weekend i met a local photographer that does the same thing and was able to look at a few of his encapsulated prints. they were AMAZING. the look and reflection are so awesome. it gives a different dimension to the print. the other thing is the fact the prints last longer and can not be damaged as easy!

as always, thanks for looking/reading.

28/52... Part 2.

ok, so i had the chance to edit a few photos from my trip.... so i decided to make today a double post day.

this was on the way back from Devils Tower, WY. the whole day was overcast and spitting. there was literally no good shots all day. i spent a better part of a 4GB CF card trying to catch something. needless to say i was upset. i had never been to the Devils Tower, it has always been something i wanted to see. i wanted to take some amazing photos, but i had such crappy weather.

on the way home the clouds broke, and the most amazing landscapes started popping up. i was just in awe! i saw this and pulled over. i had been looking for a safe place to stop for about 10 miles. i have about 40 photos all AEB for HDR to go through. this was the fist batch i decided to look at. i didn't have much time, the sun was already behind a large hill behind me. i did what i could to compose about five different angles, and spots. hopefully the rest turn out as good as this one!!

thanks again for looking.

20120506-104719.jpg This was shot withy sigma 70-300 f4-5.6. This was shot at 70mm f4, I very rarely use this lens, mostly Due to the massive amounts of chromatic aberration it can produce.

I decided to dust it off after the rain on saturday. There was a bunch of squirrels running back and forth on a power line. Since this is my largest zoom lens I decided to give it a shot. Well.... The squirrels were gone by the time a swapped lenses. So I kept using it, trying to see what I could get.

I was watching the rain roll off out roof, I snapped a couple photos of the drops falling off the helicopter. I noticed the crazy amount of bokeh, and depth of field, it really reminds me if a tilt shift style lens. The line of focus is so thin, and yet still crisp. I was going to ditch this lens, but I might keep it for this effect alone.

Revisiting the storm...

Here is a HDR shot with my sigma 17-35mm. Same location as the previous 2 posts.

This was the first shot I took. I never realized there was an apartment on this rooftop, I think it's absolutely amazing!!!

This is the top if the buildings on Phillips avenue, between 10th and 11th streets.

Thanks again for looking.

Storm HDR

20120502-181820.jpg Went out to see the storm last night. Again it was just mugging us, and all the major stuff was too far out to get a decent photograph. So I decided to improvise, I grabbed my fisheye lens, and hung out of the parking ramp. I did a handheld, 13 bracket, her shot. I was pretty pleased that I kept it mostly stable.

I processed this with photomatix. I went for more of the surreal/painting style shot for this one. I toned down the saturation, and dropped the gamma to give it some grit.

Overall not a bad shot for what I was working with, and I'm still overly addicted to HDR photography!!!
